    Notes

The Archivo Histórico Municipal de Valencia (AHMV) (Municipal Historical Archive of Valencia) contains an extensive series of documents, including the full documentation of the administration of the city of Valencia, from the 13th century to the present day.

Records in the Archive are divided into twelve sections: Documentación Real, Administración de Justicia, Documentación Eclesiástica, Códices, Funcionamiento del Consell (Gobierno), Escribanía del racional, Documentación notarial, Hacienda, Abastecimientos, Obras Públicas y Urbanismo, Instrucción Pública y Documentación Ajena.

This last section, Documentación Ajena, includes a section on Beneficencia y Sanidad [Welfare and Health] related to health and social assistance. Section I is Beneficencia y Sanidad; class III of this section contains documents on plagues and epidemics. This inventory includes a description of the documents included in two subclasses:

    • Subclass F: ‘Lazaretos. Reconocimiento de pasajeros’ (1892-1916) [Lazarets and Passengers health checking (1892-1916]
    • Subclass H: ‘Lepra’ [Leprosy] (1895 –1914)

Lazarets (or leprosaria) were social and medical institutions used in the city for infectious patients, particularly in the time of plague and epidemics, and for people affected by leprosy. They played a central role in the isolation of patients.
