    Brother Joseph Dutton (1843-1931), was a soldier, Trappist Monk, Soldier of the Cross and Veteran of the US Civil War. He came to Molokai, Hawaii in 1886 and worked with the leprosy patients at the leprosy colony on Molokai for 44 years . He was the associate and assistant to Father Damien de Veuster and became very adept at assisting with the basic rudiments of surgery and medicine in the care of the patients. He was manager and director of the Baldwin Home for young boys who were sons of leprosy patients, suffered from leprosy themselves or were orphans.
