    Notes

The Philippine National Archives (PNA), Spanish Records Division has several record groups with materials relating to leprosy during the Spanish colonial era. The great majority of the archival materials with the PNA Spanish Records Division remain un-catalogued and un-indexed. The majority of the materials also date from the late nineteenth century, suggesting that official state interest in leprosy commenced at that time. The following are records groups with materials relevant to this history, with some selected documents:

    • Beneficie y Sanidad
      • Gobernador-General de Filipinas, Contaduria General de Hacienda, Lazarinos, 18 de Julio, 23 de Julio y 5 de Septiembre 1884. The document contains a petition for assistance by five leprosy-affected people in the Marianas Islands (then administered from Manila). No government agency could assist them, and the five were referred to Church officials in the Marianas
    • Hospitales – Militar
      • Ynspector General de las Obras Publicas, Hospital de Lazarinos de Cebu; Expediente Sobre Ensache de Dicho Hospital, 12 de Mayo 1860. The document contains the engineering report and the project plan for the Leper Hospital in Cebu.
      • Ynspector General de Obras Publicas, Hospital de Lazarinos de Cebu, 1868. Report of the progress of the construction of the Leper Hospital
      • Expediente Sobre Ensanche de Dicho Hospital , 1868. This was the final report on the hospital from the Ynspection General de Obras Publicas; as the hospital was turned over to the Archbishopric of Cebu.
      • Direction General de Administraccion Civil, Obras Publicas: Leprosarias, Expediente relativo a la construccion de un edificcio con destinados a establecimiento de leprosaria de la provincia de la Laguna. The document (unpaged) describes not only the survey for the planned Laguna leprosarium, but also describes details of the communications and memoranda that were sent initiating the Resolution 1639 (of October 4, 1894) approving the general leprosy control program plan of the Inspeccion General de Beneficence y Sanitaccion.
      • Direccion General de Administracion Civil, Obras Publicas Leprosarias, Expediente a la ampliccion del edificio destinado al establecemiento de Leprosaria de Nueva Caceres, Cabecera de la Provincia de Ambos Camarines, 1895. The documents contain the survey reports for the planned construction of leprosarium in the province of Ambos Camarines, as part of a leprosy control program being considered by the Inspection General de Beneficence y Sanitaccion
      • Direccion General de Administracion Civil, Obras Publicas: Expediente relativo a la instruccion de UN edificio destinado al establecimiento de leprosaria de la provincia de Cebu. 1895. These documents contain the survey reports for the planned construction of leprosarium in the province of Cebu, as part of a leprosy control efforts being considered by the Inspection General de Beneficence y Sanitaccion
      • Direccion General de Administracion Civil Obras Publicas: Leprosarias, Expediente relativo a la construccion de um edificio con destinados an establecimiento de leprosaria de la provincia de la Laguna. The documents contain the survey reports for the planned construction of leprosarium in Laguna province, as part of a leprosy control efforts being considered by the Inspection General de Beneficence y Sanitaccion
    • Lazaretto de Mariveles
      • Juan Fernandez Shaw, Proyecto del Lazaretto de Mariveles, Obras Publicas, Comisiones Especiales, Lazarettos, 1886 The document describes the structures (together with a floor plan) of these lazarettos that were in existence in 1882-1883, but were subsequently demolished to make way for the construction of the new quarantine station for the Port of Manila. The lazaretto appears to have not been in use, but the Spanish government did not officially change the name of the place, misleading many researchers today to believe that the lazaretto de Mariveles was a leprosarium. It was the quarantine station from 1886.
    • Memorias Medicas. This records group contains all the reports of the health conditions in the various provinces. Of interest are the reports from provinces which have a historically high incidence of leprosy.
      • Memorias Medicas de Provincia de Ylocos.
      • Memorias Medicas de Provincia de Cebu.
      • Memorias Medicas de Provincia de Tondo
      • Memorias Medicas de Provincia de Ambos Camarines.
