    Notes

Please see this link (PDF) for a document (in Portuguese) on the history of the Bomfim leprosy colony. This information was provided by Ana Maria dos Santos Martins Pinho as part of the Brazilian Archival Preservation Project, 2007.

Abstract: This report represents the former inhabitants of Bomfim, as well as the origins and construction of the colony. This contributes to the preservation of the history of leprosy in Maranhão, discussing the possibilities and difficulties encountered in this first stage of the project. It covers the changes that occurred with the advent of effective chemotherapies, with the end of the system of obligatory internment and the consequent transformation of the colony of Bomfim into the Hospital Aquiles Lisboa. It contains information about the historical registers that may shed light on the past and provide much information on the history of leprosy in the state of Maranhão.
