On 12 February 1889, the Government acquired a farm from Dr João Hosannah de Oliveira, which was situated on the bank of the Cachoeira Grande river. The site was given to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia to found a leprosarium for those with the disease who were wandering the streets of Manaus. The Lazareto Barão de Manáos only had a short existence. At the time of Souza-Araújo writing (1933), this was a slaughterhouse.
