    Notes

Pakhoi is a small seaport of Kwangtung, about 320 miles westward from Hongkong. Population is about 50 000 and leprosy is one of the most prevalent diseases among the people. There are ninety in our asylum and ninety-six in the villages. Most of them are in the far advanced stages and willing to stay in the asylum or villages as they are not welcome to their families and friends. We do not know how many are hiding in their homes; either they do not like the public to know about them or they are not aware of their disease. Not infrequently they come to our out-patients department asking for relief of certain signs and symptoms of leprosy as they are ignorant of their real disease.
