C J Austin reported on his visit in 1951 "Crossed by 'Mary' to Kolombangara and visited the Seventh Day Adventist Leprosy Station at Kukudu - at present 17 patients - 4 lepromatous and 13 tuberculoid. Very attractive settlement - all leaf huts apart from central wooden building comprising small ward, theatre, dispensary and laboratory."
