    National Sanatorium Tohoku Shinsei-en (国立療養所東北新生園) was opened in 1939 as the sixth national sanatorium, with a 400 bed capacity. Its area is 351,291 square metres. In 1954 there were 628 patients, with a capacity of 770 beds.

    As one of the national sanatoria, it is still open. As of December 31, 2015, there were 77 residents (former patients) with an average age of 85.1.

    In 2006, Shinsei Museum opened in the abandoned classrooms of the sanatorium’s former primary school. Artifacts that depict the patients' lives in the sanatorium are on display.
