The official inauguration of the leprosarium was in 1333, and the facility was substantially enlarged in the seventeenth century. It is one of the best preserved leprosaria in Germany, and has been converted into an open-air museum that depicts the long history of leprosy in Europe.
Two rooms of the former leprosarium hold the historical collection, which consists mainly of photos, maps, models, historical engravings and illustrations showing aspects of life in the leprosarium throughout the centuries.
