    National Sanatorium Hoshizuka Keiai-en (国立療養所星塚敬愛園) was opened in 1935 in Kagoshima Prefecture, the southern-most province of Kyushu. It covers 370 hectares. In 1943, the sanatorium had 1,847 residents, the largest number recorded. As of December 31, 2015, there were 158 residents, with an average age of 84.9.

    In 2014, a museum was opened in the sanatorium’s former community hall. It depicts the difficult daily lives of the residents in the early days of its history, as well as various cultural and sports activities by the residents.
