Houghton Library is Harvard University's main repository for rare books and manuscripts. The collection "Dispatches from Time magazine correspondents: second series, 1956-1968" contains a dispatch related to leprosy treatment in Japan.
Details: Tokyo dispatch no. 6887 - Leprosy treatment; Tokyo U (A Campbell). This short dispatch is a “newsworthy” suggestion concerning surgical advances in the treatment of “limbs paralysed by leprosy”. It claims that 14 000 of 20 000 Japanese “may return to useful life thanks to an unidentified Japanese Professor of Medicine who claims success for surgical restoration of active use of limbs paralysed by leprosy”. It is from A Campbell and dated December 7, 1957.
Reports from correspondents were circulated to editors at the New York office of Time magazine. The dispatches are arranged chronologically by the date sent (which is sometimes but not always earlier than the date received). During this period, the dispatches from correspondents are mostly photocopies of teletypes. The copies were made and distributed to those on particular circulation lists. Some of these lists included Roy Larsen, and it is his copies that form the present collection. This collection is shelved offsite at the Harvard Depository.
