The malaterías were hospitals and social institutions devoted to the reception and accommodation of leprosy patients. Their historical origin is uncertain and the first documentary references are in the thirteenth century. They were managed by religious orders. Many malaterías and leprosy hospitals received the name of San Lázaro, and were financed and protected by the Crown itself, the nobleness, the local authorities, and the laity.

The goods and the rentals of the malaterías were passed to the State belongings by the Real Cédula the 14 of September of 1769 and those funds were applied to the maintenance of the Provincial social welfare institutions, legally approved in 1752. The Provincial Hospice integrated several casa-cuna, children asylums situated in the asturian territory to lodge orphan or abandoned children. Most of the casas cuna were founded around 1807 and were situated in Valdepares (El Franco), Santa Eulalia de Oscos, Cangas de Onís, y Cangas de Tineo.

The San Lázaro hospital (lazaret) was full of patients and its installations had to be widened. A new building was planned and then built and inaugurated the 7 of September 1754. Its facilities were amplified in 1770. The Real Hospice was closed in 1961 and its building was sold and renovated, into what is today the most famous hotel in Oviedo: the Reconquista Hotel.

    Archivist Documentation:

After the closure of the Hospice in 1965, the records were deposited in the Archive of the Provincial Deputation, situated in the building of the Junta General del Principado. From 1986 onwards, the records from the Real Hospice and from the Deputation were integrated in the General Archive from the Administration of the Principado, that in 2001 were transferred to the Historical Archive in Asturias. The Hospice Archive includes all the documental funds from the old malaterías, and leprosy hospitals.
