    Notes

Major General Leonard Wood (1860-1927) was one of the most influential American public figures committed to addressing leprosy in the Philippines. As Governor General of the Philippines between 1921 and 1927 he was instrumental in raising financial support for leprosy research and treatment on Culion island. In 1928 the organization he had established was renamed The Leonard Wood Memorial for the Eradication of Leprosy and was incorporated in New York as a nonprofit organization. The Memorial has played a major role in the development of scientific studies which form the basis for today's world-wide attack on leprosy.
