Jesus Gonzalez Urena, MD (1868-1957) is considered the founder of the modem fight against leprosy in Mexico. He was Professor of Dermatology at the University of Mexico from 1903 to 1928 and founded the Dermatologic Service of the General Hospital in Mexico City in 1905. In 1930 he establish the Leprosy Prophylaxis Service which he directed for seven years. This was the first time that the fight against leprosy had been officially organised in Mexico. He authored many papers on leprosy and in 1941 published Leprosy in Mexico in which he analyzed 136 Mexican contributions in leprosy work between 1824 and 1939.
