    U Tha Saing, MD (1903-1972) prominent physician whose investigations into leprosy in Burma (Myanmar) revealed that the extent of the problem was many times greater than the government there had previously thought. He founded a leprosy campaign in Burma and, in 1947, was appointed as Burma's chief leprosy officer. In 1953 he was promoted to the post of director for the Leprosy Control Project. He retired in 1966, having served for more than 40 years in the medical and health services in Burma. He wrote a book in Burmese, Leprosy in Burma, for which he received the second National Literature Prize. In 1967 he served as WHO consultant for leprosy in India.
