Sister Lia Schwarzmüller (1912-) was awarded an OBE for her work on leprosy relief in Tanzania in the New Years Honours list of 2000-1.
German by birth, she left her native country before the war, and was resident in a British convent near London for its duration. After the war ended, she adopted British citizenship and in the late 1940s she travelled to Tanzania to work at St Elizabeth's leprosarium in Ndanda. She has continued her work there ever since.
