Mamoru Uchida (1900-1982) was an ophthalmologist and leprosy specialist who worked in the Japanese National Sanatoria of Kikuchi Keifu-en, Nagashima Aisei-en, and Matsuoka Hoyo-en. He published several medical papers on the effects of leprosy on the eye in mice. He also studied the history of leprosy.
Uchida was also a poet (especially in the tanka form), and persuaded many sanatorium residents to develop their literary interests and skills. He used the name Morito Uchida in his literary endeavours. His numerous papers/books are kept in the Uchida Library, Kumamoto.
