Dr Chatterjee was born in India in 1896. He was an assistant research worker in the Leprosy Department at the School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta from 1928 to 1954. He was also Councillor of the International Leprosy Association (ILA) from 1948 to 1957; treasurer of Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh; a member of the Argentine Society of Leprosy; secretary of the Leprosy Advisory Board of the Indian Council of Medical Research; and President of the Indian Association of Leprologists from 1956 to 1959.

He conducted and published many studies on nerve involvement in leprosy, and also published observations on the mechanism of neural signs and symptoms of leprosy, on the mechanism of blister formation in the disease, and on muscular wasting and its peculiarities and physiological principles in the treatment of leprosy.
