Born in 1929, Dr Sansarricq completed his Doctorate of Medicine at the Université de Bordeaux in France in 1954. This was followed by a Diploma in Tropical Medicine, in Marseille, in 1955; a Diploma in Leprology, at the School of Public Health, Caracas, Venezuela, in 1959; and Diplomas in Bacteriology and Immunology, at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, France in 1964. He then qualified as a Specialist in Microbiology in the French Military Health Services in 1970.

His experience in leprosy encompasses the following activities:

1955-1958: Chief, Sector of Endemic Diseases Control, Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
1960-1963: Adviser for Leprosy Control for 7 French speaking countries in Western Africa, posted in Bamako, Mali
1964-1968: Director, Rural Health Services, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
1970-1972: Chief, Microbiology Laboratory of the Central Army Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Hygiene in the Faculty of Medicine, Algiers, Algeria
1972-1984: Chief Medical Officer, Leprosy Unit, World Health Organization, Geneva.

In July 1984, Dr Sansarricq retired, but since then, he has periodically worked as a consultant, especially with WHO.

He has served on the following committees:

1974-1984: Secretary, WHO Scientific Working Group on Immunology of Leprosy (IMMLEP)
1976-1984: Secretary, WHO Scientific Working Group on Chemotherapy of Leprosy (THELEP)
1984-today: WHO Panel of Expert on Leprosy.

Treatment Used/Researched:
Sulphones Dr Sansarricq's personal collection contains reports on mass campaigns relating to the delivery of dapsone by mobile circuits in French West Africa between 1955 and 1958.
MDT Dr Sansarricq's personal collection contains reports of all the meetings organised by WHO on the progress of MDT implementation from 1982 to date. It also contains materials related to the co-ordination of a report on the development and implementation of MDT over the last 25 years.
Leprosy Control Dr Sansarricq acted as Chief of the Sector of Endemic Diseases Control at Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso between 1955 and 1958. He also served as adviser for leprosy control for seven French-speaking countries in West Africa between 1960 and 1963.
