Ladislao de la Pascua, MD (1815-1891) was the pioneer of Mexican leprology. In 1840 he became the director of Mexico City's leprosarium, San Lazaro Hospital. He founded San Pablo Hospital (now named Juarez), which today is the most important hospital in Mexico. In 1844 published the first complete work on leprosy in Mexico entitled, "Elefanciasis de los Griegos." Lucio took some of his ideas from this work.
