Dr Richard W Truman is an American immunologist and microbiologist with expertise in leprosy. He received his PhD from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1985 for his thesis: “Host responses to Mycobacterium leprae”. From 1985 to 1995 he was a research scientist at the Pharmacology Research Department of the National Hansen’s Disease Program at Carville and subsequently, from 1995, became Chief of the Microbiology and Epidemiology Research Department of the National Hansen’s Disease Program at Louisiana State University.
Dr Truman has shown that leprosy is a zoonotic in the southern US, with there being more than 100,000 infected armadillos in Louisiana and Texas. He established the first M. leprae reference strains and genomic strain markers. He is currently active in leprosy research and maintains a colony of nine-banded armadillos for the propagation of M. leprae in armadillos and translational research studies. He also holds a post as a Regular Corps Officer for the US Public Health Service.
