1936 | Sidu Leprosy Village"During the year [1936] a survey was made on Ysabel by Native Medical Practitioner Bogese, which resulted in the discovery of twenty-seven leprosy affected people on that island. There is still no institution in the Protectorate which cares for those affected by the disease, but the Melanesian Mission proposes opening its leprosarium again in the coming year. Out-patient treatments are given at Government stations where there is a medical officer or a native medical practitioner, but little is accomplished as the patients will not come regularly for treatment." 1937 | The inauguration of the Dr L de la Pascua Dispensary (today Pascua Dermatological centre) took place in Mexico City. This was inaugurated on 2 January, 1937 in a special building built for the purpose. Dr F Latapí has been the chief of this establishment from its foundation up to now. In spite of the good facilities provided, the early stages of this dispensary were difficult in many ways. The lack of curative drugs, the prejudice against the disease greater then than now, the public health standards of that epoch, more rigid and drastic than medical and humane, were the chief obstacles encountered. However, experience of the actual work brought much satisfaction as well as troubles. In the year 1946, there was a great change, when the sulphones were used in the first cases.
