Between 1933 and 1946, Dr Shan-ho Lai (1899-1967) was head of Professional Services and superintendent of Lo-shen Leprosarium in Taiwan. In 1946 was appointed professor of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute by the National Taiwan University, and was responsible for teaching and research on the control and treatment of leprosy. During this time he was also in charge of the special outpatient clinic for leprosy at the Public Health Teaching and Demonstration Center in Taipei. He published numerous articles and made extensive attempts to infect monkeys with leprosy.
