Dr JMH MacLeod, dermatologist, was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1870. He graduated MA from St Andrews, and studied medicine at Aberdeen. He then moved to London, where he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1900 and a Fellow of the RCP in 1916.
In 1903 he published a Handbook of Pathology of the Skin. He held numerous hospital appointments, and was appointed Physician for Diseases of the Skin and Lecturer on Diseases of the Skin at the Charing Cross Hospital and Medical School from 1914 to 1930.
MacLeod’s interest in leprosy has been traced to the time he was asked to open discussion on the pathology of the disease at the Second International Congress on Leprosy, in Bergen 1909, where he was the official delegate for the London School of Tropical Medicine. He later assisted and succeeded Sir Malcolm Morris as Chairman and Medical Director of the Homes of St Giles for British Lepers.
He died on 10 Dec 1954, aged 84.
