1903 | The appearance of leprosy in the protectorate of Cameroun was first medically publicised in the German Empire in 1903, and seen as a growing threat through the report from Dr Ziemann, a doctor in the Cameroun administration, to the Governor, stressing the need to realise that leprosy would spread gradually from street-markets in the interior towards the coast. Both main “forms” of leprosy had been observed in the interior – the nodular “tuberose” and the “anaesthetic” forms; both its danger and its resistance to treatment were recognized. Ziemann observed that, to his surprise, the tribes-people tended to exclude the leprosy victims from the community, and left them to settle in the bush, or at least far from the periphery of their own settlements. This gave leverage to the need to set up leprosy homes as economically and practically as possible at specific focal points – Duala, Jaunde (Yaounde) and Garua. Meanwhile Ziemann (clearly anticipating delays in realising his suggestions) wanted photographs of leprosy victims to be replicated for use by whites for their protection when recruiting “boys”, cooks, workers etc. (Wolfgang U Eckart.
