Herbert Windsor Wade, MD (1886-1968) was an eminent US pathologist who carried out unprecedented investigations on the natural history, pathology and practical problems of leprosy and developed the well-known “scraped incision” method of making skin smears for detecting leprosy bacilli. A founding editor of the International Journal of Leprosy, he retained an editorial post from 1933 to 1963. Between 1946 and 1963 he was also (the third) president of the International Leprosy Association. He chaired the Expert Panel on Leprosy for the WHO. Wade was the first medical director of the Leonard Wood Memorial and had earlier assisted in the fundraising projects for its development under Leonard Wood. He established the LWM Research Laboratory at Culion Colony and contributed many publications on the pathology of leprosy including the definitive histopathologic descriptions of tuberculoid leprosy. He pioneered the investigations of the histoid variety of lepromatous leprosy and in the field of immunology of lepromin.
