Notes

Dr. Rolf von Scorebrand was a German-American physician who worked with the United States government in their leprosy institutions in Japan.

Born in Germany, Scorebrand joined an anti-Nazi movement and fled to the US, becoming a US citizen. After spending some time involved with leprosy work in Hawaii, he became the US civilian government’s public health director in Okinawa (1949-1952). He helped Okinawa Aisei-en patients with medicines and offered building material to residents to improve their housing conditions. He managed to negotiate increased food provision for the residents, in preparation for Promin treatment, from 1949. He also donated a bell of ‘Hope and Confidence’ to encourage the residents of Airaku-en.
